The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE)
provides a set of standards that outline how technology can and should be used
effectively in our schools. As a teacher of digital natives, or children who
have grown up with technology, it will be my job to try and meet these six
standards within my teaching. The standards include creativity and innovation,
communication and collaboration, research and information fluency, critical
thinking, problem solving, and decision- making, digital citizenship, and
finally technology operations and concepts. While it is hard to say how I will
implement each one of these areas specifically, (because let’s face it, some
schools do not have the vast amount of technology that other schools have) I
will say that I want to introduce these concepts to my students first and ask
their opinion on what each category means to them. Instead of just expecting
students to automatically meet these digital standards, I want to pick their
brains on what the standards and goals actually mean to them. After finding
this information out, I will then create lesson plans and activities
appropriate to these standards as well as appropriate to my students and what
they are learning.
